Matt Stairs: Canadian born MLB player
Right now the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies are playing on the World Series. Being a Yankees fan I was watching game one and saw Matt Stairs step into the batters box. Stairs is not a superstar and not many people know his story.
Matt Stairs is known for being a veteran journeyman in the MLB. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick he showed great athletic ability at an early age playing in hockey and baseball leagues with the older kids. After graduating from Fredericton high School he attended the National Baseball Institute in British Colombia. While at the academy he made the National Olympic Team and participated the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea. His Major league career began in 1993 with the Montreal Expos. Since, he has played on 10 different major league teams. Teams he has played for include the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, And Philadelphia Phillies.
He is only the second Canadian-born player to hit thirty five home runs in a season and ranks either first or second in all power hitting categories. Stairs is frequently considered an average player but many people feel his stats do not reflect his true talent. During the past two post-seasons Stairs has been hitting in clutch situations and coming through. He is considered a fan favorite because of his blue collar attitude and good work ethic.
During this postseason Stair is not going to get any time in the field but he will have a chance to do something with his bat. When game 3 goes to Philly he will likely be a pinch hitter for a pitcher in a close game. When the games are in New York he will be the designated hitter. Im a Yankees fan so Ill be routing for the Yankees this World Series, but good luck to Matt Stairs even though he's on the opposing team, the Philles.
