Prairie Author: Peter Shostak

Most of his paintings depict outdoor scenes, specifically bringing back times of his childhood growing up in the 1940s and 50s. One painting, "I Wonder Who Lives There," is a prime example of this. It shows a winter scene, looking down a pathway leading to a grey house. His painting names seem to echo a sense of child-like wonder. Two stories he wrote: "When Nights Were Long" and "Saturday Came But Once a Week" describe some of his childhood experiences, but also illustrated the two books.
In 1986, Shostak dedicated 5 years for one painting project, a series called "For Our Children". This fifty painting set was his most ambitious work. The paintings show early Ukrainian pioneers settling through middle and western Canada. This collection has traveled throughout Canada, each with its own story. Shostak worked tirelessly researching these stories. This collection was eventually collected in the album, "For Our Children."
In 2003, Shostak was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding work for Canada. This medal is awarded to citizens who have made a significant contribution to the community, other citizens, or to Canada.
Shostak has moved from Victoria to Coutnay, Vancouver Island, BC, but still returns to Alberta to gain inspiration.
